The good news is that the start of the school year is the perfect time to build a strong foundation with your child’s biggest ally (besides you, of course!) - the case manager!
When you work together with your child's case manager from day one, you set the stage for smoother communication, better support, and a stronger IEP or 504 plan.

A lot can change over the summer! If any of these things changed, be sure to let the case manager know.
Changes in your child’s medical or emotional needs
Changes at home
Updates in your child’s interests and passions
New strategies you tried that worked (or didn’t work)
Updated contact information
Ask these questions
Asking the right questions helps set the stage for the school year and gives you the information you need to know right away.
How will communication between parents and the teacher work this year? (And be sure to share your communication preferences too.)
How will homework be assigned? How should you access class updates?
When will you receive process reports and updates on IEP goals?
Create a partnership
The case manager should be your eyes and ears in the school - what’s working for your child, what progress are they making, what do they love about school. Creating a strong partnership ensures there are always clear lines of communication between home and school.
Check in regularly with your child’s case manager, not just at the annual review.
Share successes, not just challenges. (And ask the case manager to do the same)
Treat your child’s case manager as a teammate. You are in this together.
